Waimakariri Irrigation Ltd (WIL) is a run-of-river scheme with resource consent to take water from the Waimakariri River to irrigate 23,000 hectares. It is one of the largest schemes in the South Island. The organisation is keenly aware that as a leader in water management, and carrying the responsibility of environmental stewardship, it is incumbent on them to understand what their role is as a partner with manawhenua in this space. They approached NAIA seeking to learn about Ngāi Tahu stories, histories and people to gain and develop a deeper sense of what the context of a partnership might look like. We have helped their management team by finding a starting point for this journey, and continue to guide them through this often complex and sometimes overwhelming process, through a series of CQ sessions customised to their more specific requirements relating to the the environmental kaitiaki role they share with manawhenua.
