Meaningful relationships start with a willingness to understand, learn more and grow together. The Issac Group connected with NAIA to explore how they could enrich their understanding of Ōtautahi and manawhenua. We connected them with renowned storyteller, Joseph Hullen (Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Ngāti Hinematua), and with Joseph, we took them for a hīkoi around the city. As an avid historian and a talented storyteller, Joseph shared the stories, trials and tribulations of his iwi Ngāi Tahu from Kaiapoi Pā to the heart of the city centre. In the city centre, we linked up with Matapopore (a manawhenua group responsible for ensuring Ngāi Tūāhuriri/Ngāi Tahu values, aspirations and narratives were realised within the rebuild of Christchurch) and explored some of the beautiful cultural designs that were woven into the look and feel of the rebuilt city. Feedback from the Isaac Group expressed that kaimahi gained a deeper perspective of the people and places they work in through place-based learning and storytelling.
